How This Guide Labels Sources
- Confirmed: from Rockstar itself: its Newswire, Trailer 1 and Trailer 2, the official pre-order page, and the Extended Look.
- Reported: from press previews at Rockstar North, where journalists played or watched the game and described it. These are firsthand, but not official statements.
- Unconfirmed: leaks, retailer listings, and rumors. These are listed at the end, so you can ignore them.
What the Extended Look Showed
On August 27, 2026, Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a 26-minute video captured entirely from in-game footage on PS5. It was the first real gameplay shown, rather than cutscenes. It showed cover-based shooting, a car chase through Vice City, racing, and how several systems work together. You can watch it on Netflix or on Rockstar's YouTube channel.
Rockstar also flew media to Rockstar North for previews, published after the video. The rest of this guide uses the Extended Look for confirmed items and the previews for reported ones.
Jason and Lucia
Confirmed: you can switch between the two characters. The strength of their relationship affects the story and its ending. Jason and Lucia do not have to be a romantic couple.
Reported (previews):
- You can switch at any time in the open world, although some story sections block it.
- You can phone or text your partner to meet up.
- You can swap roles while driving, for example shooting from the passenger seat while your partner drives.
- The relationship system is described as roleplay: closeness changes some missions and situations, but there are no direct bonuses for a happy relationship.
- Jason and Lucia have separate Criminal Profiles, so they can end up very different.
Wanted System, Heat, and Criminal Profiles

Confirmed: the six-star wanted level returns. The police also take your clothing, appearance, and vehicle into account.
Reported (previews):
- A crime does not always trigger a wanted level. The police are alerted if someone sees you, an alarm goes off, or a tracker on a stolen car is triggered.
- After an alert, police search the area, and the search zone can stay active after you leave.
- A Heat display shows what police know: whether CCTV footage exists, your appearance and clothing, your weapons, and your getaway vehicle.
- You can remove clues by destroying CCTV footage, changing clothes, hiding weapons, switching vehicles, or splitting up with your partner.
- Star colors carry meaning: solid white means direct visual contact, flashing white means you just lost sight, hollow stars mean a reported crime with no description, and red means you are inside the search area.
- Wearing a mask stops CCTV from giving police a usable description.
- Rockstar has not confirmed what happens at six stars.
Criminal Profile (confirmed, details reported):
It tracks how you commit crimes across the game, unlike wanted levels, which reset. Reported tiers run from Professional to Aggressive, Violent, and Psycho, and previews say a further tier may exist that can cause irreversible changes.
Cars, Robberies, and Money
Reported (previews):
- Vehicle theft: the Waink app shows a car's security level, tools needed, tracker level, and resale value. Older cars can be hot-wired. Expensive cars need special tools. Hijacking occupied cars uses a quick-time event.
- Registering stolen cars: you can register some stolen cars as your own for a fee. High-end models come later in the story.
- Fuel: you can run out of petrol and refuel at stations. Pay 'n' Sprays return and remove a car's wanted level.
- Driving: Rockstar says the driving physics were rebuilt, aiming for the weight of GTA 4 with the accessibility of GTA 5. Circuit and dirt-bike racing were shown.
- Robberies: you can rob almost any shop. Every location differs in entrances, cameras, safes, and staff. Small robberies are hands-on, such as bagging cash from a till.
- Money: there are three kinds: bank balance (safe), cash (you can lose it if you are Wasted or Busted), and loot in duffel bags (must be sold to a fence). Loot can be sold only to the right fence, who is unlocked through the story.
Combat
Reported (previews):
- Auto-aim is no longer active by default. Aiming is more flexible and can be customized.
- The Focus ability slows time and highlights enemy weak points.
- You can carry two handguns and two long guns, but only one long gun on your back. Openly carrying a ready weapon makes NPCs react with fear.
- Weapons have more weight and recoil than in GTA 5, so sustained accurate fire is harder.
The World and Activities
Confirmed: the game is set in Leonida (Rockstar's version of Florida) and features Vice City. Rockstar's GTA VI site lists six regions: Leonida Keys, Vice City, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.
Map size is not confirmed.
Rockstar has not published a size in square kilometers. Press reports vary: previews said Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos, and another report put the whole map at about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Treat all of these as unofficial.
Activities (reported and seen in footage):
Basketball, kayaking, mini-golf, billiards, diving, skydiving, jet skiing, fishing, hunting (including alligators), wrestling, and shooting ranges. Transport includes buses, trains, taxis, and the RydeMe app.
Character changes (reported):
What you eat, how often you work out, and how you sleep show on your character. Regular training builds muscle, and eating badly adds weight.
Social media (reported):
You can scroll social feeds in the game and find NPC events to visit.
Small details (reported):
Footprints stay in the sand, sweat shows after sprinting, traffic changes by time of day, and dogs may refuse to be petted.
Graphics and Platforms
Rockstar says the Extended Look was captured entirely in-game on PS5. Rockstar has not detailed specific graphics features such as ray tracing or hair physics, and previews did not confirm whether PS5 Pro will have a higher-frame-rate performance mode.
PC: there is no announcement, no release date, no price, and no system requirements. GTA 5 came to PC roughly 18 months after consoles, so some outlets expect a PC version in 2027 or 2028, but that is a prediction, not a fact. If you plan a PC build for GTA 6, wait for official requirements first. When they are announced, you can use our FPS Calculator and Bottleneck Calculator to check your setup.
Price, Editions, and Pre-Orders
- Standard Edition: $79.99.
- Ultimate Edition: $99.99, with extra vehicles, weapons, and apparel.
- All pre-orders and purchases before November 20 get the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Digital pre-orders also include one free month of GTA+. Check your console's subscription settings before it renews, if you do not want to keep it.
- Digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12.
- The physical version is a box containing a download code.
No Microtransactions, No Online Details
Rockstar has said the single-player portion will launch without microtransactions and that no generative AI was used in its development, according to Red Bull's summary of Rockstar's statements. The Extended Look revealed nothing new about GTA Online, and GTA 6 launches as a single-player experience.
What Is Still Unconfirmed
Do not rely on these until Rockstar confirms them:
- Different special abilities for Jason and Lucia.
- A "911 call countdown" wanted system, or specific police behavior at two stars.
- The exact number of vehicles, and details of vehicle interiors.
- Claims about hundreds of thousands of NPC dialogue lines.
- The exact map size.
- Specific ray tracing or hair physics features.
- Any PC or PS5 Pro details.
- Anything based on the 2022 hack footage or retailer listings.
